“My vision is fine! I don’t need a comprehensive eye exam.”

A vision screening provides only a limited view of your eye health. It's similar to having your blood pressure checked at a health fair instead of receiving a complete annual physical. While vision screenings can identify some vision concerns, they don't provide the full picture of your eye health.

Limitations of a Vision Screening

A vision screening is not the same as a comprehensive eye exam. While screenings can identify certain vision issues, they typically only measure distance visual acuity and do not assess overall eye health, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, focusing ability, or how the eyes work together.

Vision screenings are often performed in schools, workplaces, health fairs, or primary care offices by individuals who may not have specialized training in eye health. They also use limited testing equipment and cannot provide the detailed evaluation available during a comprehensive eye exam.

The comprehensive eye exam evaluates vision at distance and near and both external and internal structures of the eye for signs of ocular and systemic disease.

They test visual acuity, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, eye movement, focusing ability, and eye coordination. They also screen for eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic and hypertensive eye disease as well as corneal and retinal conditions, which may be related to other systemic health issues.

American Optometric Association: Eyes and Overall Health 

The American Optometric Association recommends annual or bi-annual eye exams depending on individual risk factors. At Primary Eyecare Associates in Burke, VA Dr. Nechel, Dr. Butler, and Dr. Jarvis consider your overall health history as they provide your comprehensive eye and vision exams.  Although you may see an eye doctor separately from your primary care provider, your eyes are evaluated holistically. Our doctors review your medical history, medications, symptoms, lifestyle, work environment, and factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and exercising, all of which can impact your vision and eye health.

Based on your needs, your doctor may recommend annual or more frequent eye exams.
